Bev Shea: Giving the Gift of Music to The Cove

Last week, our friend George Beverly Shea, who recently celebrated his 102nd birthday, donated his Johannus electronic organ to The Cove.

The organ will reside in the Chatlos Memorial Chapel and will be a treasure for years to come. It wasn’t until after the organ was donated that we realized our existing organ had been struck by lightning and was no longer working. God is good!

At the dedication, Bev gave us an even better gift when he sang a few of his favorite hymns for us while Randall Atcheson played the newly donated instrument.

In February, George Beverly Shea was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for lifelong artistic contributions to the recording medium by The Recording Academy. Born in 1909, at 102 years of age, he became the oldest artist to ever receive a GRAMMY®, his second, awarded at a special invitation-only ceremony.

  1. I can only imagine how fabulous it was to her Mr Shea singing in your chapel. The acoustics were no doubt an added blessing to such a blessed voice as Mr Shea’s. Thank you for sharing this with us. If it were possible I would love to have been there with all of you and Mr Shea. Blessings to you all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  2. I would love love love to have heard it and just to have played one song one it would have made me so very happy! I love to play organ and to hear one played as well.
    Blessings to you Mr. Shea!

  3. Just saw this article on George Beverly Shea. My husband, John, and I have loved Billy Graham and Mr. Shea for so many years. We used to visit Montreat – stayed at John and Bunnie Lake’s bed & breakfast – visited The Cove. Wonderful memories! Have a picture framed in our music room taken from an old 1970’s Decision magazine – poor children standing on steps with the verse Matthew 25:34-40. We know that on this side of heaven we will probably never meet, but look forward to the day when we can tell you just how much you have meant to our lives. What a blessing you have been!!! Thank you for your service to Him.

  4. Is it possible to reaffirm one’s marriage at the Chatlos Memorial Chapel with a minister from the Billy Graham Association? My wife and I have been married eleven years. We were married at Aldersgate United Methodist Church and I am a former Southern Baptist Deacon. I have a Master’s degree from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. Nancy and I attended a seminar at the Cove last year under Dr. Erwin Lutzer.

    God bless you!

    1. Thank you for your inquiry! Presently the Chatlos Memorial Chapel serves as the Visitor’s Center here at The Cove. Due to the number of visitors, we are unable to serve as a venue for wedding ceremonies. We are sorry we are unable to accommodate. May the Lord bless you as you continue your search for a ceremony site.

  5. God bless you and thank you for your consideration.

    Charles and Nancy
