A Thanksgiving Message from Will Graham

Will Graham Guest Post

By Will Graham, Cove Executive Director

I really do appreciate Thanksgiving. What’s not to like? You get to enjoy time with family, a day full of football, and—of course—food. More than just food, it’s good food. And there’s often a lot of it.

It’s true that many of us will be feasting on significant portions of tasty treats on Thanksgiving, but as we look ahead to this wonderful time of year, I’d like to focus on a different type of hunger.

While food that nourishes our body is good, it is nowhere near as eternally important as that which nourishes the soul. We need something that will feed the spiritual hunger that is within us.

My grandfather, Billy Graham, often said that there’s a “God-shaped hole” inside each of us. It’s that space that many people try to fill with wealth, possessions, sex, drugs, alcohol, work or relationships.

The problem is, the things of this world are fleeting, they’re broken, and they’ll eventually let you down. Money and belongings can be ripped away from you in a moment. Relationships falter. Drugs and alcohol wear off and leave you right back where you were, or worse.

There’s a beautiful passage in the book of Psalms that I’ve grown to love. “For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness” (Psalm 107:9, NKJV).

It’s such a simple sentence, but it encompasses all that mankind has been seeking for millennia. It is God who fills us up. He is the One who refreshes our soul and dwells in our innermost self, meeting those needs and desires that seem to be so elusive. We hunger for Him, and He alone satisfies.

Let me ask you this: What are you filled with today? Are you consumed with bitterness and anger? Do you feel like you’ve gotten a raw deal in life? Are you chasing the things of this world to fill an emptiness in your soul? Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired?

If so, I’d encourage you to seek God and the goodness that He brings. Rather than being consumed with the temporary and broken, you could be filled with the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Draw close to God, let Him satisfy your longing and hungry soul, and you’ll truly have something to be thankful for this year!

Bless you,
Will Graham

  12. Some of my happy and most filling times have been spent at The Cove! Only God could have put that in the heart of our Dear Graham family! It blesses so many people. I know that God is pleased to hear the joy that fills the hearts and lives of those who drop by for a visit.

  13. We were visiting friends in North Carolina and we made a visit there at the Cove. We took the tour of the chapel. Beautiful place and very nice people. I remember going to one of Billy’s evangelist conventions when I was a teenager.
I love your “Thankful” message. My prayer is that all who read this are touched by it and realize we all need God in our lives. He’s the reason for our thankfulness. God bless you! <3.

  14. Dear Mr. Graham,

  15. Dear Will,
Thank you for this lovely greeting of Thanksgiving. My husband and I have been blessed to have stayed at The Cove 3 times this year. We are already signed up for 2 more trips over to your beautiful cove for 2018. I always leave “fed” in every way and ever closer to God with each visit. But, that is not why I am writing today. I always have wanted the opportunity to tell Mr. Graham that he was the person who taught me about Jesus. My parents did not go to church so what I learned as a child watching Mr. Graham on Television is how I came to know Jesus. I grew up and married a good Christian man who also loves me unconditionally even though I have failed both my husband and God more than once. Will, since I may never get the chance to tell your wonderful grandfather “Thank You” personally, I hope that you will remember this note of Thanks to Mr.Graham and let him know how thankful I am for his guiding me to the loving arms of Jesus Christ. Blessings to you and your family.

    1. Thank you, Lynda! We look forward to seeing you and your husband next year! We appreciate you sharing your story with us. Bless you!

  16. At 71 I can attest the veracity of Mr. Graham’s post. Keep the Lord close in your heart and mind, and be especially thankful for all we have here in America.
May God continue to bless America, and may we return to a more God-fearing and thankful nation that seeks Him and His ways in everything we do.
Happy Thanksgiving to all here and across America!

  17. Hey Will,

Thanx for your message. Sorry to have missed you when you were in Woodstock First. I don’t miss too many Sunday AM but I did that morning. I’m 87 now…fairly good health and enjoying life. I’ve always appreciated you, Will. Would like to stay at the Cove sometime. Helped build it—but never stayed in it!

  18. God bless you Will. My family has appreciated Billy Graham and his family through the years. This ongoing ministry is a blessing to many, many of us. God is using you all. We loved visiting the Cove in Ashville and the Billy Graham Center in Charlotte a few years ago. It is all so very well done and honors our Lord. We pray for you and love you all. With much joy and thankfulness for our God, Vernice Deming Zdrazil

  19. So much to be thankful for. I love Thanksgiving because it let’s you stop and reflect on how great our God is. He is always with us as His child when we are believers in Jesus Christ as Savior.
Looking so forward to the Rapture and my husband of 52 years seems to believe that when God calls Billy Graham home that’s going to be the Rapture time. I know no one knows the day or hour, but that would be great. If God said, ” Son go get Billy and my bride”. Praise, praise to our King.

  20. Thank you Graham family for all the love that you share to everyone.
I pray you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
    Stay strong !!
May GOD Always Bless You All !!!!!

  21. Wonderful message, and so true. Jesus Christ fulfills us and gives us eternal life. He is the source of true peace, joy and strength. We have so much to be thankful for!

  23. Thank you Will for your wise Thanksgiving message. Today, I was given another opportunity to feel the love of God. I am so thankful for what He has done for me, and I have so much gratitude, that I can’t stop thanking Jesus! God is so good to me. His Grace brings peace to my heart.
I wish you and you family a Blessed Thanksgiving, and I would like your Grandfather Billy Graham to know I’m thankful for his journey in giving the message of hope and salvation to the world.

  24. Thank you for you insight and wisdom. May God continue to bless you during this wonderful season of the year. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

  25. Thank you for allowing God to do His redemptive work through you. You and your Father and Grandfather have truly been a timely blessing to the world for such a time as this.

  26. Excellent message and scripture for Thanksgiving. We need s wall of faith and protection and armor. So thankful for all of the Legacy of the Graham Families.
Stay the course. What a beautiful heritage.

  27. Thank you, Will. That was nicely stated. I need to tell you, I was so thrilled to hear that you, a third generation of the Graham family are a major part of this wonderful, Godly family. Thank you and God Bless You and Your Family. Happy Thanksgiving to you also!

  28. Thanks Will: I truly enjoyed your Devotion. I have been a Firefighter all my life, I have seen the best and the worse of what people can do to each other. Thank goodness for the Fellowship of Christian Firefighters International. In this we have regular encouraging fellowship so when we go out on calls to the hurting people, not only to help them, but it becomes second nature to us to help lift them up and leave them encouraged from the Word of God.
    Thanks again.

  29. Hi Will,

Miss being with you at Montreat. I am so thankful for you and your work for our Lord.
Rich blessings to you and your family this Thanksgiving!

    In Christ,

    Bruce

  30. Thank-you, Will, for those inspiring words.
And there is something else that many of us use to fill up the God-shaped hole — food. Obesity is an epidemic in our country, and eating can become a dangerous recreation. May we search our hearts and minds and turn that over to God’s healing ways if that is a problem for us.
My wife and I spent our second trip to The Cove to hear Dr. Erwin Lutzer this fall and are excited to be signed up to hear Anne Graham Lotz next fall! God bless you and your family in this Thanksgiving season.

  31. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. We are so thankful for the gifts God has used your family to give our family for over almost 70 years. My dad came to Christ one Easter listening to your Grandpa on the Hour of Decision. God has been faithful to give salvation to his children, his children’s children and their children and many more in our family. I could add much more about the Cove, The Library, Decision Magazine, but to God be the glory, great things He has done.

  32. Wil,
Thank you for the beautiful devotion. It is true, He is the only One to fill us with goodness.
Wishing all your family and “The Cove” staff a wonderful Thanksgiving.
    With His love,
    Nancy Coble

  33. Thank you so very much for the word of God that you shared with me and for the world to read as well. I could not find anything else better to read than the word of God it really is inspiring to my soul and the only true food into my spirit.

  34. Thank-you. Your message was right on Will. Even if your family is not close, like ours, you can still enjoy the day, and spending time with God! Bless you, and the Billy Graham family, Will,! Don & Barbara Evangelinos

  35. I Thank you, your grandfather and your father for their faithful witness all of my life. So proud you are following their wonderful example. May God continue to bless you.

  36. Thank you. One thing I am thankful this year is the opportunity of reconnecting with your mother-in-law at our 50th High School Reunion in Pennsylvania. Give her my love if she is with you for the holidays. I would love for her to come see us when she is in NC next.
