Saturday Snapshot — Summer Interns Tour The Cove

Each summer, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) offers a 10-week internship opportunity to college students looking to work in their field of interest within the context of a Christian ministry.

Earlier this week, the interns left BGEA’s Charlotte headquarters and headed for the mountains for a tour of The Cove.

The 12 interns hailed from Asbury, Baylor, Cedarville, Cornerstone, John Brown, Liberty, Indiana Wesleyan, Taylor, and Wheaton universities.  The departments they worked for over the summer included: Finance, Communications, Internet Evangelism, Audio Media Services, Video Media Services, and the Billy Graham Library.

One intern, a recent graduate from Liberty University, has a passion and a real talent for photography, so we’re sharing some of the photos he took during their time here. Thanks for sharing you gift with us, John Fowler!

First stop on the tour was the beautiful Chatlos Memorial Chapel and Visitor’s Center.  The roses in Ruth’s Prayer Garden were still in bloom.

The Visitor’s Center has a scale model of the Billy Graham Library, which is located near BGEA headquarters in Charlotte, NC. Since all of the interns had recently either visited or were working in the Library, they loved seeing the Library and it’s property from this perspective.  (The buildings in this photo are just a couple of inches tall.)

The Chapel sanctuary holds such rich history, from pews that were originally used by the Royal School for the Blind, to the 400 + year old pulpit from the Church of England, to the beloved organ gifted to the Chapel by the late George Beverly Shea.

This beautiful Steinway piano was purchased from a local Asheville area woman in the late 1980′s.  Can you imagine her surprise when she opened the door to greet the people who had responded to her newspaper ad, only to see George Beverly Shea standing there with the then Cove Executive Director?!  Mr. Shea graciously agreed to play a song for her.

Rocking chairs as you enter the Training Center offer a place to rest, fellowship and enjoy the sights and sounds of God’s creation.

The interns were given a rare peak into Billy Graham’s office at The Cove.  While Mr. Graham mainly used his office in Montreat, when he wasn’t traveling the world, his office at The Cove is more of photo memorial of how God used him in his 70+ years of ministry.

And a day at The Cove wouldn’t be complete without a taste of the delicious frozen yogurt!  It’s said that the calories don’t count at our elevation… ; )

We hope you enjoyed John’s photos.

  1. Oh how I love everything about the Cove! I will never grow tired of visiting, or sitting in those rocking chairs! These young people are so far ahead of where I was at their age. Nevertheless, whatever the path our Heavenly Father has had us on is evidence of His breathtaking love and that He has a plan and purpose firmly established for all His children. Thank you for encouraging these interns and sharing the beauty of the Cove with them.

    1. It is a blessing to see how God is working in their lives! His special plan for each is unique and their trust in Him was very evident. Bless you, Vicki!
